CALLED — Monthly Retreat Day for Catholic Young Adults

Called Retreat Days are held on the first Saturday of each month (9.00am–3.00pm) at Whānau Māria Centre, Ponsonby, Auckland.

Who is this retreat for?

CALLED is open to young adults aged 18–30 who desire space to slow down, pray, reflect, and listen to God’s presence and call in their lives.

Fr Frank Bird guides this retreat day and helps create a prayerful space to enter into silence, pray with scripture, experience the sacraments, and listen more deeply to God.

With only 10 places available each month, CALLED is intentionally small, creating a safe and supportive environment for reflection, silence, prayer, and faith-sharing.

What the day includes:

  • Welcome and Introduction to simple prayer and reflective practices

  • Quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament

  • Guided prayer with Scripture

  • Faith-sharing with other young adults

  • Time in silence and personal reflection

  • Lunch and relaxed reflection time

From 1.00–3.00pm, participants are also able to make a 20-30 minute meeting time (optional) for:

  • The Sacrament of Reconciliation

  • Or Spiritual accompaniment

Cost:

The cost for the day is $10, which covers:

  • Lunch and hospitality

  • Printed Prayer Booklet and reflection materials

Retreat Day Information.

Arrival. Participants are invited to arrive between 8.30-8.50am so that everyone can be welcomed and ready to begin together at 9am.

Car Parks. A limited number of Car parks are available at the Whanau Maria Centre. You will be required to arrive by 8.50am as the gate will then be closed for security reasons. If you arrive after this time please find carparking in the nearby streets. A small side door of the gate gives access to the Whanau Maria Centre when the gate is closed.

Timetable. Participants are requested to be present for the whole day, The retreat day begins with prayer together at 9.00am and concludes with a short prayer at 3.00pm. The morning involves a time of welcome and introduction, prayer practices involving times of silence and times together with scripture and sharing. Following lunch together there are opportunities for choosing individually a reflective practice, a nearby walk in the park, an opportunity to read and reflect in the library or personal prayer in the chapel. The afternoon has the opportunity for those who want to receive the sacrament of reconciliation or receive spiritual accompaniment.

Cell Phones. To support a day of reflection and enter into silence, cell phones are invited to be on silent or turned off. Cell phones are requested to be kept in your personal bag or placed in a basket near the entrance to the door. If you need to use your phone you will be invited to go out of the retreat space to use it so as not to disturb other retreat participants.

What to Bring: You are invited to bring a journal and pen so that you can note down words or ideas from prayer or conversations that help you for your journey. Wear clothes that allow you to relax and feel comfortable in seats or couches or bean bags depending on the place and space you choose to be in.

Lunch: A simple lunch is provided for participants and we will all enjoy lunch time together at a large table. Lunch will normally involve coffee, tea, orange juice, and either salads, sandwhiches, sushi. If you have special dietary requirements you may feel more comfortable with bringing your own lunch and sharing this with Fr Frank by Wednesday prior to the Retreat for catering purposes.
