Spiritual Reading
Introduction
In the Catholic prayer tradition, spiritual reading is also called ‘lectio divina’ which means divine reading.
There is a belief that when we slow down, and slowly read spiritual texts, God can make one word or phrase speak personally to our hearts and lives.
Many people want to hear ‘words’ from God; but are not aware of how to ‘listen’ to ‘words’.
Spiritual reading is the practice of slow reading and sensitive listening.
We can do spiritual reading alone, or with a group. The helpful idea is not to read like we read a book or newspaper or social media - but read very slowly, waiting for a word or idea to ‘speak’ personally to you.
The 4 R’s can be a helpful reminder of a prayer pattern for Lectio Divina: Read, Reflect, Respond, Rest.

2. Reflect - Meditatio: Gently reflect on the word or phrase that strikes you the most. What do you think God is saying to you with this word?
3. Respond – Oratio: Gently sit with the word and let yourself respond with a prayer to God.
4. Rest – Contemplatio: Gently rest without effort. Enjoy the presence of God and the word spoken to you. Conclude with a word of thanks or ponder how to live this word in your daily life. .
