Centering prayer
Introduction
Centering prayer is an ancient prayer practice which many Christians learnt when they went off into the desert to try and be closer to God in prayer.
Centering prayer is a way of helping our busy minds and bodies become free of distractions and center upon God.
In the Book of Psalms we have an inspiring invitation to prayer: “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Be still can be translated as ‘relax’ or ‘let go’.
In Centering prayer we use a phrase or word to capture the minds attention and gently bring ourselves toward our heart and center.
Repetition of the prayer word or phrase when we experience distraction in prayer is a prayer that gradually brings us back into the presence of God and leads us to rest in stillness. ..
Practice
Relax: Place yourself in a relaxed position. Breathe in and out slowly, consciously bringing yourself to a point of readiness to be with God.
Choose a Word of Phrase: Choose a meaningful word that leads you to God (e.g., Love, Peace, Healing, Courage, Jesus) or a scriptural phrase (e.g.,“Be still and know that I am God” – Psalm 46:10; “Jesus, have mercy on me” – Mark 10:48; “For God, everything is possible” – Mark 10:27).
Distractions: When you notice your mind is distracted, repeat your simple and meaningful word. Feel your word and let it guide your head to your heart. The word and its desire is a prayer.
Stillness and Silence: Imagine being a little child on Mum or Dad’s lap... whispering your word and then gently falling into silence. The silence is not empty but rather full of love; resting in God .
